Natural or synthetic fill is just the start of the options available to you when it comes to high quality duvet inners. What makes one better than the other? We take a look at how to choose the right duvet inner for you.
Your duvet inner’s casing
Before we get into what fills your duvet inner, let’s look at the casing. All quality duvet inners will be made with a 100% cotton casing. From down to synthetic fill, a luxury duvet must be encased in a natural fabric. That’s because natural fabric ensures maximum breathability and comfort. If polyester casing is used, all the benefits the natural fill (such as down) are lost. Cotton casing also gives some breathability to synthetic fills.
And when it comes to down inners, down-proof cotton casing is essential to ensure your down doesn’t escape. So, always look for a “down-proof cotton casing” as an indication that your duvet inner is properly made.
Pure down inners
Its warmth-to-weight ratio is impossible to beat. When selecting a down/feather inner be sure to check for a down content of more than 80%. High feather content duvets are heavy, clumpy and don’t wash well. Feathers are also not effective insulators, so less feather and more down means a higher quality duvet inner.
At Falucca, we have lightweight summer pure down inner and an autumn weight inner you can use all year round.
Other natural fill options are cotton, wool, and silk. The easiest of these to care for is cotton as they are lightweight and machine washable.

Synthetic duvet inners
Even though we always recommend natural fills for your inner, down alternatives have come a long way and you do get synthetic inners that are soft and comfortable. They are not as breathable and temperature regulating as natural inners, but a good quality synthetic inner can be a good option for beds that are not used daily.
Luxury down alternative duvet inners offer a down-like feel that’s lightweight with good plumpness and at a more accessible price. Even though they don’t have the same temperature-regulating properties as natural fill duvet inners, they are a good option for guest bedrooms and allergy-sufferers. Be sure to always choose a synthetic inner with a cotton casing.
