1. Measure up your mattress

When shopping for fitted sheets, arm yourself with a few key measurements. You will need the width, length and depth of your mattress. Now add 10cm onto the depth measurement and you have the size you will be looking for. While standard sizing might not be your exact measurements, the variation should not be more than 5cm in any direction.

2. Choose fully elasticised sheets

Look for fitted sheets that have a fully elasticised skirt. Elasticised corners only are a manufacturing short cut and should be avoided!

Common mistakes to avoid

Is your new fitted sheet suddenly not fitting? Here are some common problems to consider:

Tumble dry blues

If your fitted sheet fitted perfectly a fortnight ago but now getting it over the mattress is a 15-minute training exercise, the culprit will most likely be improper laundering. It’ll be either an extremely hot wash or (and this is far more likely) over drying on a hot cycle in the tumble dryer. Most natural fibres shrink when exposed to extreme heat, but it’s true that quality and shrinkage often go hand in hand as higher quality fabric tends to shrink less.

Most shrinkage can be prevented by laundering on a warm cotton wash and a low heat tumble dry. Better yet, dry it on the washing line and you’ll get the best possible results; your sheets won’t shrink, they’ll feel better and you’ll save some money on your energy bill too.

Mattress evolution

Mattresses have also changed over the years. They have got deeper and many linen brands have not kept up with this trend, with the result being fitted sheets that don’t cover the mattress.

Start with colour scheme

Your colour scheme is the foundation of your overall look. For our French classic, we chose two colour schemes using muted tones, and a white base for our bed linen. Warm pink and beige hues offered a romantic, whimsical accent, while soft blues and greys created a dreamy, masculine feel.

Choose good furniture

Keep detailing minimal

Play with pillow composition

A beautiful classic bed requires a generous number of pillows, including the pillows you’ll be sleeping on, your king pillows and your scatter cushions. Lay these out in various combinations to create different looks. Sit your pillows up against the headboard, or lay your pillows down to create a linear, more masculine look.

Instead of adding your scatter cushions in the front, place three scatter cushions against the headboard with your sleeping pillows in the foreground. Three scatter cushions composed this way makes your bed feel like one unit instead of two sides.

If you choose good basics, you can put your personality into the mix of things. Don’t be afraid to give your bed the styling focus it deserves and remember: there are no rules to styling. It’s perfect when you love it!

No more dust bunnies

First up, you need to look to your bedroom corners, under the bed and between the night stand and your bed base. You might vacuum regularly, but dust has an amazing way of finding those hard to reach places, so make it your mission to move the bed out of its usual spot and vacuum your way into those nooks.

Into the washing machine

Strip your bed entirely, throwing your sheets, pillow, duvet cover and box sheet into the washing machine and yes, your pillow and duvet inners too. For 100% Egyptian Cotton bedding, we recommend you do a full length cotton wash to get rid of any lingering nasties.

It’s also possible to wash your duvet and pillow inners but be mindful of what it is filled with. Most synthetic inners are safe to wash, but it’s best to check the instruction label first to ensure you’re doing it properly.

A high quality down duvet can also be washed using a down-friendly product like Woolite, but once again be sure to check the instruction label before tossing it into the machine. To get your down duvet nice and fluffy again, dry it on the washing line on a sunny day and shake it out every half hour.

Clean your mattress

Now it’s time to move your focus to your mattress. Strip off your mattress protector and take a good look at the bare mattress beneath. While your mattress protector no doubt keeps most of the dirt at bay, it’s still worth cleaning your mattress at least once every season to ensure optimal hygiene.

Popsugar.com recommends using bicarb mixed with your preferred essential oil to give your mattress a deep clean. Get a box of bicarb, add about 10 to 20 drops of the oil to it and mix together well. Sprinkle the now fragrant powder across the mattress surface and then rub it in thoroughly. Leave it to work its absorptive magic for at least an hour to rid your mattress of any nasty residue and odours. Vacuum up the bicarb thoroughly (and any dust mites in the process) and then flip or rotate your mattress so that you avoid that inevitable body indentation for as long as possible while lengthening the life of your mattress.

One final dusting session

Rid the whole room of any leftover dust by giving all surfaces – including the walls – a good wipe down and then it’s time to start building your bed back together.

Add those spring layers

Since the evenings are warming up, you’ll want to reconsider that heavy duvet inner and change to something a little lighter. That heavy winter blanket can be aired out, folded up and packed away, while a lighter throw added in its place.

Here are four things you can physically check when you happen to have a product right in front of you:

#1 Firmness of the fabric

The weave of the fabric should be firm, which can be tested by scratching the surface of the cloth. If the threads shift easily, the product may be inclined to develop holes at the seamed edges.

#2 Uniform weave

The weave of the fabric should be uniform. Hold a sheet to the light and look for any unusually thick or thin areas. Bedding in which the weave is not uniform will wear unevenly and definitely doesn’t indicate high fabric quality.

#3 Even colour

The colour should be even and look fresh. If there is a fold or crease in the product, check whether the colour has rubbed off. This could be an indication of poor dye quality.

#4 Dusty fabric

No powdery dust should appear on the surface of the fabric. If so, this is an indication of too much sizing and may conceal poor fabric quality.

Do a little bedding research

Get to know your choices. With the internet at your fingertips, doing a little research will save you money and time. Find out what options are available to you locally and make sure you understand the key terms such as thread count and weave, as well as the variations in fibres, from totally natural fibres to fibre blends. Also do some reading around what it takes to produce these kinds of fibres. It will all give you the knowledge you need to make good bedding choices.

Local bedding specialists

Look for smaller companies. More often than not, smaller company specialising in bedding will give you better value for your spend as you are not paying for the large overheads associated with big retailers. In fact, high rentals in shopping malls, advertising budgets and even the CEO’s bonus are all worked into the price of the product.

The question you need to ask yourself is: how much of what I am spending is actually on the actual product?

More passion = solid product knowledge

Additionally, smaller speciality suppliers are more often than not far more passionate about their products and therefore more knowledgeable. They will be able to give you better advice and should be able to answer all the questions you might have.

Temperature control

To start off, place a rug beneath the bed to insulate the bed area from any cold air coming up from the floor, and so that your bare feet don’t have to come into contact with any cold flooring as you climb into bed. Even if your bedroom has wall-to-wall carpeting, adding a rug beneath the bed creates a feeling of luxuriousness, helping to highlight the bed as the main feature of the room.

Next up, opt for black-out curtains in your bedroom as this will enable you to shut out the world at any time of the day, control the room temperature more effectively and turn your bedroom into a cosy personal sanctuary.

Pillow talk

We’ve heard it many times before, but it’s worth hearing again: the glowing screen light from electronics has a significant impact on your body’s ability to rest. Not to mention that if your device keeps lighting up with notifications, you’ll struggle to stay focused on the sensual experiences in your bed.

Add a sensual touch

The bedroom is meant to offer a serene ambience to help you leave everyday worries at the door, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have some character. While your dominant colour palette might be tranquil tones, throwing in a few brighter colour references will help keep things stimulating and sensual. While there is a 30cm difference in the width between the two bed sizes, standard South African duvet inners and covers stay a resolute 230cm in width regardless. Yet, the King duvet is 20cm longer which seems strange given that the King and Queen beds are the same length.

The problem that arises is the drop-down length of the duvet on either side of the bed. On a Queen size bed you will have a drop down of approximately 40cm on either side, but on the King size bed you will only have a drop down of 24cm which is why a King duvet and cover often does not cover the mattress on the sides of a King size bed.

For those of us after a well made-up bed, this exposed mattress is definitely less than ideal. But more than that, not having the correct duvet size to match your bed can make sleeping with a partner tricky since you’ll end up fighting over the duvet if it is too small.

Standard duvet sizes

Below is a size guide (with width measurements), indicating which duvet inners and covers are best suited to the standard bed sizes in South Africa. Make sure you get the right size for your bed:

Single Beds 92cm – Three quarter duvets and covers, 150cm

Three Quarter Beds 105m – Double duvets and covers, 200cm

Double Beds 137cm – Double duvets and covers, 200cm

Queen Beds 152cm – Queen duvets and covers, 230cm

King Beds 183cm – Super King duvets and covers, 260cm

Extra Length duvet sizes

Extra Length beds are only 10 to 13cm longer than standard length beds and therefore do not have much impact on duvet sizing. However, this size difference does need to be taken into account when purchasing fitted sheets.
